Who am I?

My name is Chloé Sanguinetti. I am a passionate Communication and advocacy freelancer currently based in Paris, France.

What I do

I am a versatile creative content producer with a focus on humanitarian and development issues. In 2014, I set out on a round the world trip during which I produced the documentary ‘The Voluntourist’. The film is a compilation of interviews with international volunteers, experts and directors of local organisations hosting volunteers. It aims at showing that voluntourism can often do more harm than good, especially in the case of orphanage tourism, extremely dangerous and harmful to the children. The film has now been seen over 50,000 times and is used as educational material by (I)NGOs to raise awareness of the dangers of voluntourism.

Part of my work since then has been focused on strengthening awareness around the issue of orphanage volunteering. I am part of the Rethink Orphanages international network, led by Save the Children. ‘The Voluntourist’ was screened in the French Assemblée in July this year and my current research into the role of France in the international issue of orphanage volunteering will be presented to French policy makers in my continued role as an advocate for responsible volunteering.

For the past three years I have been working as a freelance communications expert from Phnom Penh, Cambodia and have just relocated back to Paris, France. I specialize in content production for development actors: from writing blog to design and typesetting of various communications material, from video production to the facilitation of child protection and responsible tourism workshops for international volunteers, I am a versatile consultant who loves to take on new challenges.

My background

Before moving to Cambodia, I was part of the Communications team at the Active Learning Network for Accountability and Participation in Humanitarian Action (ALNAP), based in London, at the Overseas Development Institute. I supported the organisation of international events such as the Global Forum for Improving Humanitarian Action, and the various launches of the State of the Humanitarian System report. On top of designing communication materials (both for print and digital) and being in charge of the online social media presence of ALNAP, I also produced a number of educational videos, which have been screened in international meetings.

I hold a masters in International Relations and Humanitarian Aid, and a bachelor’s degree in European Studies. This involved a great deal of extensive research and writing, policy analysis, as well as an understanding of a wide range of development issues.
